Winter Weather Systems Claim 5 Victims in the Gaza Strip Amidst Dire Conditions in Temporary Camps.

Strong cold-season winds brought walls down onto fragile shelters sheltering people displaced by war in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least 4 individuals. These deaths underscores the perilous living conditions that persist after more than two years of intense airstrikes and severe shortages of aid.

Ceasefire Provides Little Respite from Severe Weather

While a truce has been in effect since last fall, humanitarian organizations report that residents do not have the sufficient shelter required to survive frequent winter storms.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the victims, said on this week that the deceased include a pair of adult females, a girl, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy succumbed of extreme cold during the night.

"International actors has allowed us to witness loss of life in all its forms," stated a family member following the funeral. "While it is correct the shelling may have paused for now, but we have seen every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Shelter Collapse

According to the medical center, 3 members of a one family — elderly a man, his teenage relative, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an eight-metre high wall fell on top of their dwelling in a coastal area of Gaza City. No fewer than 5 additional people were hurt in the incident.

Their relatives on that day started removing the debris that had buried their loved ones and rebuilding the tent shelters for survivors.

Humanitarian Distribution and Continuing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were handing out shelter kits, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothes as well as nutrition and sanitation supplies across Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of the population reside in makeshift tents since their houses were reduced to ruins over the course of the hostilities. Aid groups contend not enough shelter materials are reaching Gaza during the ceasefire.

Fatality Numbers After the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, part of the Hamas-run government, says over 440 individuals have been killed by Israeli fire and their remains taken to hospitals after the truce began. The authority maintains comprehensive casualty data that are considered generally reliable by international bodies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children’s agency Unicef, stated on that day that at least 100 children under the age of 18 – 60 males and 40 females – had been lost their lives since the truce started due to military operations, including drone strikes, air raids, artillery fire and use of live ammunition. These numbers, he said, reflected cases where sufficient details had been compiled to warrant recording, but the overall count is expected to be higher. He noted that hundreds of children had been wounded.

"While 'explosions and shootings have decreased' under the truce, they have not stopped," the spokesperson told journalists at a press conference in Geneva by video link from the Strip. "Therefore what the world now calls quiet would be considered a crisis in any other place," he said.

Third Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of over two million people has been struggling to fend off the freezing temperatures and storms away while enduring lack of assistance and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is badly needed during the winter months. It’s the third cold season after the war involving the state and the group started on 7 October 2023, when fighters stormed into Israeli territory and killed approximately twelve hundred individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry reports more than 71,400 people have been fatally injured in Israel’s retaliatory offensive.
