Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, just before the start of play at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, eclipsing the mark previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.
