Entrepreneur Jared Isaacman has been confirmed as the next chief of NASA, concluding an atypical nomination process where President Donald Trump put his name forward, pulled the nomination, and then put him forward again.

The billionaire, an amateur jet pilot who became the first private citizen to conduct a spacewalk, is also the first agency head in decades to come directly from outside public service.

For many, the success of his leadership will be decided by one crucial test: its ability to return humans to the lunar surface ahead of the Chinese space program.

The President has emphasized a desire for the America to build a lasting moon outpost, both to allow for harvesting materials and to function as a stepping stone for travel to the Red Planet.

Legislative Approval and Political Dynamics

On This week, the U.S. Senate approved the nomination with a bipartisan vote.

The President originally rescinded the nomination in the spring, referencing a "thorough review of prior associations".

At the point, the president was engaged in a dispute with tech billionaire Musk, one of his major contributors, with whom Isaacman has professional ties.

The new administrator indicates he is now fully behind the administration's goal to extract lunar resources, putting him at odds with Musk, who has said that going to the Moon is a detour from the journey to Martian exploration.

Strategic Plan

In the ongoing space battle, countries are vying to exploit the Moon.

“Now is not the time for inaction but a time for progress because if we lose ground, if we stumble, we may never catch up, and the results could shift the global dynamics here on our planet,” Isaacman told US Senators earlier this month.

The billionaire entrepreneur sees fostering more private sector competition as crucial for achieving those goals, according to a circulated document outlining his vision for the agency.

In his Senate hearing, he reaffirmed the strategy, which he crafted when he was initially selected, but clarified it was a work in progress.

His openness to rivalry could also cause friction with SpaceX. Recently, he commended the granting of a major contract to Blue Origin, which is one of the few rivals of SpaceX.

In the document, he suggested the agency should increasingly partner with research institutes, casting the agency as a "force multiplier for science".

He highlighted the planned deployment of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope as a cornerstone project.

"Should we be approaching something remarkable - like deploying the Roman Telescope - I will explore every option to make it happen, even using my own resources if that's what it requires to deliver the discoveries," he wrote.

Background and Net Worth

According to analyses, Isaacman's net worth is pegged at around $1.2bn, made mostly from his payment processing company and the divestment of his company that provided flight training and operated a private fleet of military aircraft.

The NASA administrator role will be his initial foray in public office, a contrast to the previous two appointees who served as NASA chief.

He will replace Sean Duffy, who has served as acting administrator since July.
