A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us locate the video.

We are checking video footage and photographs posted earlier today that depict the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is under way.

The initial step to verify the location of where the images originated was based on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.

Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
