Those $150m Players Transforming a Highlight Machine
This year's National Basketball Association season begins this week, signaling the first time in a ten years that Australia's two biggest hoops stars – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are unsigned.
This change indicates a transition period, as Australian backcourt duo Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels step up as essential players for contending teams, with recently signed huge contracts making them some of the country's top athletic income generators.
They aren't the only ones. A group of 14 Aussies are expected to play for playing time across the NBA, ranging from experienced big men Jock Landale and Duop Reath, emerging wings in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to promising draftees like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Out to Prove Himself
After protracted discussions with the Bulls, Giddey finally signed his new deal worth $100m ($153m) over four seasons last month. It's a major deal for the Melbourne native, but in NBA terms it is cheap for his role and reputation as a lead playmaker. Hesitation for Chicago’s front office to offer a max deal means the young star begins this year with much to prove.
Having been traded by the Thunder at the beginning of last campaign, Giddey watched as his old team charged to the title in his absence. As the Bulls look to make the playoffs in the less competitive East, he will have to show his scoring and defence are elite-level or else he may fall back towards the league's outskirts.
Dyson Daniels Eyes Another Step
The guard signed the same deal as Giddey recently, and after his most-improved player award last season, the Atlanta player's trajectory has taken off in Atlanta following his departure from the New Orleans. He is now praised as one of the NBA's best defensive specialists, and led the league in steals with 3.0 spg – more than one whole steal per game higher than the tally of the runner-up.
Playing next to dynamic Trae Young in the Hawks, the youngster can be successful this season as a secondary ballhandler and elite defender as long as the team make the playoffs. But if he can improve his three-point shooting, which was subpar last year, and continue to enhance his distribution and driving, Daniels could become one of the league’s most versatile players.
Johnny Furphy A Dunking Sensation
Pacers wing Furphy has emerged as a crowd favorite in the state following a succession of spectacular dunks in pre-season. His athletic displays prompted NBA personality Pat Beverley to describe him as the “top Caucasian leaper we’ve seen in a long time”, and an opportunity to the All-Star slam dunk competition could be on the table.
Following playing just eight minutes per contest over 50 games in his rookie campaign, the former Maribyrnong College player is in the running for a Indiana rotation that might favor young players following setback to star playmaker Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor An Outside Shot
Guard Proctor fell in the June draft all the way to the 49th pick, where Eastern Conference contenders Cleveland selected him. The Cavaliers are favourites to reach the Finals from the East, so it would be rare for a rookie taken in the second round to see significant court time. But the Sydney product has seen time in pre-season, and his pro-level shooting offers him a opportunity to contribute.
Playing Time Squeeze Ahead for Veteran Quintet
Seasoned big man Jock Landale has a opportunity to claim the starting five spot in Memphis given top prospect Zach Edey will be out for the opening of the season after a surgical procedure.
In the Trail Blazers, Duop Reath is the experienced reserve to young centres Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could see consistent minutes if the Blazers find themselves competitive. His teammate Matisse Thybulle is expected to be deployed as a defensive specialist off the bench.
In Charlotte, Josh Green's off-season shoulder procedure has resulted in him without a timeline to return. The 24-year-old still has a contract for the upcoming year, but won’t want to give his teammates at the rebuilding Hornets too much head start. And injury has already hindered Dante Exum, who has a knee problem and has missed key pre-season chances in Dallas.
Aussie Hoopers On the Fringe
Additionally, there are those who are not expected to see much, if any, game action this year. Thirty-eight-year-old Joe Ingles is back in the Timberwolves, but seems to be little more than a big brother ensuring Anthony Edwards in check.
Rookie Rocco Zikarsky is likely to be nurtured by Minnesota Timberwolves through their affiliate team. Fellow first-year players Lachlan Olbrich in the Bulls and Alex Toohey for the Golden State Warriors are also in the development pipeline, while the experienced Luke Travers will be hoping to win playing time with Proctor for the Cavs.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Seeking Contracts
If there were any doubts Patty Mills was planning to end his career, he addressed it with a training clip shared on his accounts recently, showing the veteran remains in form and determined on landing another league deal.
Simmons' intentions is anyone’s guess after an off-season in Australia, angling and using with a Sherrin. Although he took to Instagram recently to reject rumors he was done, the 29-year-old – an elite player as recently as 2021 – has yet to return to the league.
