Sam Fender was awarded the prestigious award recently in his hometown

The star has donated the complete sum of his £25k award prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to protect the Britain's small concert spaces.

He was presented with the prize on 16 October as his latest record the album was declared the top album of the previous year.

Fender has decided to give the cash to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the essential function small stages had in his initial steps.

"I wouldn't be doing this success if it wasn't for all the shows I did around the North East, and further afield, when I was just getting going," stated the artist. "These locations are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – about 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, well-known musicians such as the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its efforts to help venues survive, by applying a modest fee to their admission fees, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also took part, collecting more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support 38 local spots across the UK.

The money supported locations that were dealing with potential shutdown due to challenges caused by floods, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Some locations were granted financial assistance in upgrading infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted artists and fans.

"The concept that money from performances in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it begins for artists like me, is just sensible," Fender has commented.

He is far from the only musician to give his award winnings to charitable organizations.

Back when Pulp earned the trophy in the mid-90s for their record the album, lead singer Cocker announced that the group would donate their winnings to the non-profit War Child.

That year, artist she shared her award among multiple good causes, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I gave a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they required better apparatus," the artist shared with a publication.

In recent years, Ezra Collective contributed their prize money to the local youth club that developed their band, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

Also winners that year the group gave their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was found to have the disease.

"The victory was ample," said vocalist Heather Small. "The prize was the extra but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our winning affected somebody else's life."

In the past week, the trust announced it had protected a couple of local spots in the South East, by placing them under local control.

The Joiners in that area and the second in that location were acquired under the public acquisition initiative, which is funded by the arts council and enthusiasts who buy "stakes" in the properties.
