Amid a unambiguous signal to Western nations, Leader Vladimir Putin informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to provide “unbroken” shipments of crude oil to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in Delhi and affirmed their partnership were “immune to external pressure.”

A Statement For the Western Countries

This affirmation, made on Friday, seemed to be a direct challenge at western countries, who have sought to compel New Delhi into reducing its historical links with Moscow. The backdrop follows previous US actions, including additional tariffs targeting New Delhi over its purchase of Russian oil.

“Moscow remains a trustworthy source of oil and gas and anything necessary for the development of India’s industry,” Putin stated. “We are ready to persist in guaranteeing the uninterrupted flow of energy for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, though he did not naming energy explicitly, supported the focus by noting that “a stable energy base has been a robust and vital foundation of the Indo-Russian partnership.”

Questioning US Interference

In the lead-up to the talks, in a television interview, Putin had questioned American pressure over India's dealings with Russia. Putin stated, “When Washington can claim the privilege to buy our nuclear fuel, how can you deny India claim the identical right?”

The visit was his first journey to India since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, and both sides engaged in a clear effort to project that the friendship between the two leaders remained intact.

A Personal Welcome

In a notable move, the Indian PM welcomed directly Putin upon his arrival. Both leaders shared a warm hug like longtime companions before enjoying a one-on-one meal the night before the summit.

Modi in his statement called India's alliance with Russia as “a beacon” and noted it was “founded on mutual respect and deep trust.”

Expanding Strategic Ties

The meeting resulted in several key agreements regarding defence and financial collaboration. A major outcome was the completion of an joint economic plan aimed at 2030, which targets to double commerce to $100bn each year by the target year.

The leaders also pledged to recalibrate their military partnership. Even as Russia is still India's biggest exporter of arms, its share has diminished lately as India works to diversify its sources.

The official release stressed an agreement on the joint production of cutting-edge defence platforms, even if explicit mention of systems like the Su-57 fighter jet were not made.

Ultimately, Russia and India affirmed that during the “current complex, strained, and unpredictable global landscape, their relationship stay strong to external pressure.”
