Prime Television Selections: Seven Must-Watch Movies This Week

Highlighted Choice

This Satirical Thriller

The filmmaker's daring commentary examines the tyranny of women's appearance as well as the perceived horrors of advancing years. Demi Moore offers an inspired performance as Elisabeth, an aging film star forced into hosting a fitness program on TV. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she seeks out an enigmatic and gruesome procedure titled this experimental method. This generates a younger clone called Sue, resulting in a steadily more parasitic dynamic between the two. October 17th, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This classic whodunit thriller features Keira Knightley playing Laura, an ace reporter who takes a break from covering world issues to embark on an opulent ship with a terminally ill Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her partner, plus additional affluent guests. Yet once an unknown lady goes overboard during the evening and the entire crew claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Available now, Netflix

Presence

Steven Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills with this innovative supernatural story shot entirely from the perspective of the phantom. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their fresh home, the camera – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of conscious of the poltergeist, and it looks like guarding her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor embraces his unique fame through this autobiographical spoof. He plays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor playing himself who agrees to a $1m payday to appear at a festive event at a Mediterranean location for the rich superfan Javi. Contacted by the intelligence agency to spy on the suspected cartel boss, his unconventional method proves useful. October 11th, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone

Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective despite the lack of a sequel. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, multiple child abductions has rendered the youth anxious. Once Finney is taken by the villain and locked up in a basement, he fears a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators offering help, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. October 11th, late evening, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for greed in this director's brilliantly over-the-top true story about the fallen TV preacher and her felon spouse. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who proclaims early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye begin profiting from the American public's religious faith. It's a riot of poor styling, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, yet Chastain succeeds to present the character as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, Film4

Black Bag

The current week's second offering from the filmmaker delivers a spy mystery as tight as the polo necks sported by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to identify a mole among the team out of five possibilities – including is his own wife. Both actors are experts of calm composure, leading to a delightful mental battle of deception or honesty takes place. The supporting cast join in the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
