Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these medications should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
