"These professionals are becoming strained," the official informed a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, causing terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks due to climate and additional factors.
